This report, written and presented by Martin Cassini, with an introduction by Jeremy Paxman and a studio discussion, was broadcast on 14 January 2008. This is a slightly edited version. It prompted "an unusually large" online response - at the last count, 242 postings. Among others, it features the late pioneer of shared space, Hans Monderman, and neuroscientist, Professor Susan Greenfield. Transport for London was invited to take part but refused. Why? Because they know that the system over which they preside is indefensible?
